James Montgomery Flagg (my Grandfather) created the original Uncle Sam "I Want You". Although most researches will refer to JMF as the model of his original Uncle Sam, nothing could be farther from the truth. My Mother tried her adult life to correct this error, and I will carry on this monumental task, with the advent of the internet perpetuating it.
In 1916, JMF reluctantly accepted a 4th of July project by Leslie‘s Magazine, and eventually found his Uncle Sam one rainy night on a train bound for Parris Island, where he was to unveil a portrait of the Commandant.
His "symbol of our country" was a young, roughly 17 year old, Marine, which he considered the finest branch of our armed forces. He was able to acquire a 24 hour pass for this "boot" not normally allowed off base, and he aged his model's adolescent face by forty years and turned a circus clown's costume into symbolic dignity (as told to me and written by his daughter, my mother, Faith).
This cover was eventually made into a recruiting poster, at the request of the State Dept, and is now recognized as the most famous war poster of our time.
By WWII, JMF had ironically begun to look remarkably like his original Uncle Sam, and he did indeed use his mirror image in several new posters. When FDR is quoted as saying "saving model hire" in a personal letter to JMF, he is referring to the 2nd World War posters.
Faith would say, "I thought you might find the facts more fun than the fantasies."
NYC born and raised in a family of talented artists, accountant to the stars in Los Angeles, granddaughter of Uncle Sam creator, now cruzin' in Santa Cruz.
If this doesn't shock the daylights out of you, we are truly on the verge of facist America. Having listened to the vile, putrid attacks against the Bush administration for the last eight years, the tables have surely turned.
Atlas Shrugs reports:
POLICE OFFICER SAYS: "THIS AIN'T AMERICA NO MORE" By Pamela Geller, August 28, 2009
This may appear, at first blush, to be amusing, but it is deadly serious. I watched the left, during the Bush administration, say and spew the vilest things - speech protected under the first amendment. You never heard the right, the GOP, the Bush administration say boo. This is hope? This is change? This is fascism.
Vid hat tip Martin. This took place at Democrat Jim Moran's town hall meeting. No pictures on signs. Got that? You will be charged with trespassing.
"I can charge you with whatever I wanna charge you with".
The left just making up the laws as they go.
UPDATE: More demo-skulduggery. The Dems have got to be outlawed - ya know, racketeering charges.
Just when you think it can't get any more staged than the last one, along comes Montana. Something smelled 'fishy' about that Pep Rally of Obama's, and now a local has spilled the beans in Pamela Geller's Altas Shrugs:
ATLAS SHRUGS Obama's Town Hall on Health Care: Staging Montana By Pamela Geller, August 20, 2009
Sue in Montana wrote :
By now you have probably heard that President Obama came to Montana last Friday. However, there are many things that the major news has not covered. I feel that since Joe and I live here and we were at the airport on Friday I should share some facts with you. Whatever you decide to do with the information is up to you.
On Wednesday, August 5th it was announced locally that the President would be coming here. There are many groups here that are against his healthcare and huge spending so those groups began talking and deciding on what they were going to do. The White House would not release ANY details other than the date.
On about Tuesday Joe found out that they would be holding the "Town Hall" at the airport. (This is only because Joe knows EVERYONE at the airport) Our airport is actually located outside of Belgrade (tiny town) in a very remote location. Nothing is around there. They chose to use a hangar that is the most remotely located hangar. You could not pick a more remote location, and you can not get to it easily. It is totally secluded from the public.
FYI: We have many areas in Belgrade and Bozeman which could have held a large amount of folks with sufficient parking. (gymnasiums/auditoriums). All of which have chairs and tables, and would not have to be SHIPPED IN!! $$$$$
During the week, cargo by the TONS was being shipped in constantly. Airport employees could not believe how it just kept coming. Though it was our President coming several expressed how excessive it was, especially during a recession. $$$$$ Late Tuesday/early Wednesday the 12th, they said that tickets would be handed out on Thursday 9am at two locations and the president would be arriving around 12:30 Friday. Thursday morning about 600 tickets were passed out. However, 1500 were printed at a Local printing shop per White House request. Hmmmm......900 tickets just DISAPPEARED.
This same morning someone called into the radio from the local UPS branch and said that THOUSANDS of Dollars of Lobster were shipped in for Obama. Montana has some of the best beef in the nation!!! And it would have been really wonderful to help out the local economy. Anyone heard of the Recession?? Just think...with all of the traveling the White House is doing. $$$$$ One can only imagine what else we are paying for.
On Friday Joe and I got out to the airport about 10:45am. The groups that wanted to protest Obama's spending and healthcare had gotten a permit to protest and that area was roped off. But that was not to be. A large bus carrying SEIU (Service Employees International Union) members drove up onto the area (illegal)and unloaded right there. It was quite a commotion and there were specifically 2 SEIU men trying to make trouble and start a fight. Police did get involved and arrested the one man but they said they did not have the manpower to remove the SEIU crowd.
The SEIU crowd was very organized and young. About 99% were under the age of 30 and they were not locals! They had bullhorns and PROFESSIONALLY made signs. Some even wore preprinted T-shirts. Oh, and Planned Parenthood folks were with them.....professing abortion rights with their T-shirts and preprinted signs. (BTW, all these folks did have a permit to protest in ANOTHER area)
Those against healthcare/spending moved away from the SEIU crowd to avoid confrontation. They were orderly and respectful. Even though SEIU kept coming over and walking through, continuing to be very intimidating and aggressive at the direction of the one SEIU man.
So we had Montana folks from ALL OVER the state with their homemade signs and their DOGS with homemade signs. We had cowboys, nurses, doctors you name it. There was even a guy from Texas who had been driving through. He found out about the occasion, went to the store, made a sign, and came to protest.
If you are wondering about the press.....Well, all of the major networks were over by that remote hangar I mentioned. They were conveniently parked on the other side of the buildings FAR away. None of these crowds were even visible to them. I have my doubts that they knew anything about the crowds.
We did have some local news media around us from this state and Idaho. Speaking of the local media...they were invited. However, all questions were to be turned into the White House in advance of the event. Wouldn't want anyone to have to think off the top of their head.
It was very obvious that it was meant to be totally controlled by the White House. Everything was orchestrated down to the last detail to make it appear that Montana is just crazy for Obama and government healthcare. Even those people that talked about their insurance woes........the White House called our local HRDC (Human Resource and Development Committee) and asked for names. Then the White House asked those folks to come. Smoke and mirrors...EVERYTHING was staged!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very dismayed about what I learned about our current White House. The amount of control and manipulation was unbelievable. I felt I was not living in the United States of America, more like the USSR!! I was physically nauseous. Joe and I have been around when Presidents or Heads of State visit. It has NEVER been like this. I am truly very frightened for our country. America needs your prayers and your voices. If you care about our country please get involved. Know the issues. And let Congress hear your voices again and again!! If they are willing to put forth so much effort to BULLY a small town one can only imagine what is going on in Washington DC. Scary!! Sue - Bozeman, Montana
Let's all be respectful and polite at Townhall meetings and rallys. And to set a good example, let's attack a news crew.
Caleb Howe at RedState describes:
BREAKING: The Mob Attacks A News Crew!
By Caleb Howe, August 16, 2009
Sometimes rhetoric gets out of hand. We all know this. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone and villainizing them as Hitler 2.0. So when you paint the President as a monster causing the death of innocents, and the media as his Goebbels, are you inciting violent reaction? Sometimes, apparently so.
I shot the shocking video below myself. I have not editing the foul language so please be warned: not safe for young ears.
Like me, you’ve been hearing about an angry mob. Well it exists. Watch this, then read on for important eyewitness details.
That violent mob was, as you no doubt guessed during my transparent buildup, from the left. I filmed this attack on Griff Jenkins and Fox News at the Recreate 68/World Can’t Wait xxxriotsxxx protests in Denver during the Democrats’ xxxcoronationxxx convention last fall. If you want to hear something even more vile, which I filmed at a protest outside the RNC, click here. Please understand, though, I did not edit the profanity or vulgarity, which are shocking and abundant.
Also in that Denver protest, and in those at the RNC, were ample depictions of Bush as Hitler. For those of you with short memory (media), back then the comparison was so commonplace it became abbreviated: Bushitler. Don’t remember any of that? Allow me to assist you (http://tinyurl.com/qq9u26).
But that’s cool. Because remember, in 2006, shouting and interrupting town halls was teh hip (http://tinyurl.com/nhdb2y). It really didn’t drop out of fashion until … well, you know, he won (http://tinyurl.com/r7u8m5).
Anyway, for all you KosKids (I’m looking at you Boxer) and mainstream media talking heads out there who so recently grew a sense of propriety … we’ll just call this a reminder. You have my permission to think about that Fox crew the next time you’re calling old people given microphones at events designed to solicit their feedback an “angry mob”. K? You’re welcome.
Here's another example of "Do as I say, not as I do" mantra by the left, as they launched their assault on Bush as Hitler during his administration. Ironically, conservatives don't use this kind of attack, and any references to Nazi Germany is in comparison the nationalized government control - its definition (National Socialist German Worker's Party).
From Pelosi's swastikas, Dingle's KKK, Hoyer & Pelosi's Un-American and now the sign-carrying Obama as Hitler -- all coming from the left.
RedState writes:
OBAMA IS HITLER!!!! ... say supporters. Err, what? By Caleb Hose, August 12, 2009
Let us, for the moment, leave aside the question of why the media suddenly doesn’t like comparing the President to Hitler. Instead, let us today address the more pressing question of why the media doesn’t like facts.
If you believe Nancy Pelosi, Rep. John Dingell (http://tinyurl.com/ra8cu6), little girls totally not planted (http://tinyurl.com/kq2xa3) at Obama town halls, and “reporters” asking Gibbs “questions” at today’s White House “briefing,” then you are probably certain that there are scores of hood-clad Klansmen with guns storming the town halls on health care waving swastikas and, incongruously, accusing Obama of being Hitler. Yep, the mob is apparently experiencing a little hate-confusion.
Also, they are actually paid to be there, they are wearing Brooks Brothers suits, and they are elite rich poor white racist trash who’ve never heard of Hawaii, trade stocks by day, clean stocks by night, belong in stocks by right, and above all else, are un-American. Got that?
Yes we are a sordid, motley mob of natty dressers. But most of all, above everything else, we are mean. Mean mean mean. We’re shouting, you see. And putting Hitler mustaches on Obama. Right?
Right?
Heh.
Well … not as such, no. As George Claghorn (http://tinyurl.com/oufzrb) noted yesterday, Steve Gutowski uncovered the origin of that now ubiquitous Obama-Hitler sign from the Dingell town hall, and it isn’t quite what the media reported:
So the media is spectacularly wrong already. The criticism was from the left, not the right. (The left does have some practice http://tinyurl.com/pmed4f with such signs you know.) But guess what? That’s not all.
You see, not only is the sign from the left, the guy carrying the sign is moonlighting. Listen to eyewitness accounts at theblogprof (http://tinyurl.com/nlfskz):
Note the black man holding up the poster. This screenshot was used in reports by the MSM who painted the protesters as Nazis. Here’s the thing, though - that black man is a Dingell supporter!
The Hitler sign at the Dingell town hall was carried by a Dingell supporter.
The Hitler sign at the Dingell town hall was carried by an OBAMACARE supporter.
Eyewitnesses caught this genius outside after the meeting HANDING OUT OBAMACARE MATERIALS.
You’re hearing this right? Good. I just want to make sure. You should go to theblogprof (http://tinyurl.com/nlfskz) and read the whole thing, it’s worth it; and make sure you watch the Cavuto video.
Folks, this is where we are. Obama is organizing for America alright. The unions are organizing thugs to assault you. The astroturfers (http://tinyurl.com/qzn62z) are organizing a mercenary force to shout you down. The Democrats are organizing a smear campaign to shame and marginalize you. And the White House is organizing a compliant press to docilely repeat these talking points to try to trick you. To trick all of us. What do you call an organized group who commit crimes and lie? Can’t remember (http://tinyurl.com/phat48).
One of my favorite Ann Coulterism's: "You can always tell what the Libs are up to, by what they accuse you of doing."
The latest in addition to Astroturfing, Pelosi & Hoyer accuse opposition as "Un-American" (http://is.gd/2aG2w). So much for the First Amendment.
There's a run on new hire positions for ObamaCare Advocates (http://tinyurl.com/ntb9e7), and looks like there's new 'skin in the game'. HotAir writes:
Guess who’s funding ObamaCare advocates? by Ed Morrissey, August 10, 2009
Greg Sargent notes that a familiar face will start showering cash on organizations trying to build support for ObamaCare. George Soros, who once pledged his entire fortune in an unsuccessful effort to unseat George Bush, has pledged another $5 million to overcome popular opposition to the government takeover of the health-care industry. Sargent rightly notes that this will become a flashpoint for both sides of the divide:
In another sign of the urgency gripping the pro-health care reform camp, billionaire George Soros has pledged to sink $5 million into the fight, the group getting the money confirmed.
Soros — whose operation carefully guards the privacy of such donations — made the pledge to Health Care For America Now, the leading coalition of pro-reform groups, unions and providers, HCAN chief Richard Kirsch confirmed in an email that was forwarded to me. …
The Soros pledge is noteworthy, because both sides will seize on it. The right will say it shows the real astroturfing is coming from the pro-reform side — billionaire bogeyman Soros is bankrolling this fight!
The left will cite the donation to demand that HCAN show real results. Some on the left, such as blogger Jane Hamsher, have been asking why heavily-bankrolled HCAN hasn’t been able to secure more commitments from Dem members of Congress to stand firm behind a public option.
However, that group may run afoul of Rahm Emanuel and the White House. Emanuel has demanded that HCAN and other advocacy groups focus their sights on Republicans and stop attacking vulnerable Democrats — which, in this case, would be those who have shown great reluctance to get on board with ObamaCare. If HCAN takes Emanuel’s advice, it’s hard to see what they’ll use the money to do, other than buy advertising that strictly focuses on the issue. That issue hasn’t played well thus far, and $5 million of advertising won’t make a dent in the opposition.
That’s where the pharmaceutical industry’s cash will come in handy:
The drug industry has authorized its lobbyists to spend as much as $150 million on television commercials supporting President Obama’s health care overhaul, beginning over the August Congressional recess, people briefed on the plans said Saturday.
The unusually large scale of the industry’s commitment to the cause helps explain some of a contentious back-and-forth playing out in recent days between the odd-couple allies over a deal that the White House struck with the industry in June to secure its support. The terms of the deal were not fully disclosed. Both sides had announced that the drug industry would contribute $80 billion over 10 years to the cost of the health care overhaul without spelling out the details.
With House Democrats moving to extract more than that just as the drug makers finalized their advertising plans, the industry lobbyists pressed the Obama administration for public reassurances that it had agreed to cap the industry’s additional costs at $80 billion. The White House, meanwhile, has struggled to mollify its most pivotal health industry ally without alienating Congressional Democrats who want to demand far more of the drug makers. White House officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
To give this some perspective, it helps to recall that John McCain spent $126 million on advertising for the entire general election campaign in 2008. Why have the pharmaceuticals gone for ObamaCare in a big way? Obama promised not to use Medicare’s market advantage to drive down prices any more than the $80 billion already pledged by the industry. That’s basically price-fixing of a kind that the Federal Trade Commission would investigate if it involved a private-sector insurance giant.
Remind me again which side is Astroturfing and getting big, powerful firms funding their operation, and which one represents the actual sense of Americans on government-controlled health care.
There seems to be new jobs popping up all over ther place. A demand for 'activists to support health care' has want ad listings everywhere, so unemployment should be way down next month.
From RedState:
Let’s Talk Astroturf By Caleb Howe, August 9, 2009
So I received an email/comment this morning about a craigslist ad soliciting health care activism for money. “Activism for money,” I thought!! Was this it at last? The missing link Democrats have been searching for? Obamacare opponents turning up at town halls really are a mob?
We really are nothing but a slew of paid hacks drummed up by the promise of easy cash by cynical Obamacare opponents to create an artificial appearance of opposition?!?
So I started searching around, and posting links on Twitter, and reading links I received by reply. Turns out there are hundreds, if not thousands, of advertisements seeking “activists” who will be paid to support Obamacare. That’s right CNN. That’s right Olbermann. You want astroturf? It’s out there by the dozens. In support of, not in opposition to.
I’m going to post a few screenshots from that horde below, but remember its only a sampling:
The first is from Josh Treviño, who notes you should pay special attention to the dates here:
And back to Craigslist: ...............................................................................

That last one might be my favorite. “Women and People of Color and Members of the GLBT community are strongly encouraged to apply.” Paying for diversity. Can’t you feel them ooozing progressive-osity? I feel tolerant all over!!
There are literally hundreds more. Go to Craigslist. Have fun. And ask yourself who the astroturfers are. Michelle Malkin may have an answer for you. Also find more at Looking At The Left. Or RedState diarist Charlie. Ed Morrissey has a great report here. And of course, RedState’s Jeff Emanuel.
Oh. One more thing. Don’t let’s forget the biggest astroturfer of them all.
Many Americans are planning to speak to their representatives during the August summer recess. America has growing concerns about the direction of their country, and have carefully laid out questions they desperately want answered.
All of this in the face of being labeled 'mob rule', Astroturfers, and sucker-punchers. Well, Obama has a plan, as reported in RedState. Read Obama's message, and look for that knock on your door:
What’s that about Astroturfing, Mr. President? By Jeff Emanuel, August 5, 2009
The former Community Organizer is at it again. Not content to request that any who question his health care proposal online or “in casual conversation” be reported to the White House by their fellow citizens, the Astroturfer in Chief is seeking to rally his remaining foot soldiers in an effort to out-demonstrate and out-protest the regular Americans who have had enough of the trillions in spending added, and the choices and decision-making freedom lost, under the Obama administration.
In an email sent via his permanent campaign organization, Organizing for America, and titled “This is the moment,” Obama said the following:
........................................................ This is the moment our movement was built for.
For one month, the fight for health insurance reform leaves the backrooms of Washington, D.C., and returns to communities across America. Throughout August, members of Congress are back home, where the hands they shake and the voices they hear will not belong to lobbyists, but to people like you.
Home is where we’re strongest. We didn’t win last year’s election together at a committee hearing in D.C. We won it on the doorsteps and the phone lines, at the softball games and the town meetings, and in every part of this great country where people gather to talk about what matters most. And if you’re willing to step up once again, that’s exactly where we’re going to win this historic campaign for the guaranteed, affordable health insurance that every American deserves.
There are those who profit from the status quo, or see this debate as a political game, and they will stop at nothing to block reform. They are filling the airwaves and the internet with outrageous falsehoods to scare people into opposing change. And some people, not surprisingly, are getting pretty nervous. So we’ve got to get out there, fight lies with truth, and set the record straight.
That’s why Organizing for America is putting together thousands of events this month where you can reach out to neighbors, show your support, and make certain your members of Congress know that you’re counting on them to act.
But these canvasses, town halls, and gatherings only make a difference if you turn up to knock on doors, share your views, and show your support. So here’s what I need from you:
Can you commit to join at least one event in your community this month?
In politics, there’s a rule that says when you ask people to get involved, always tell them it’ll be easy. Well, let’s be honest here: Passing comprehensive health insurance reform will not be easy. Every President since Harry Truman has talked about it, and the most powerful and experienced lobbyists in Washington stand in the way.
But every day we don’t act, Americans watch their premiums rise three times faster than wages, small businesses and families are pushed towards bankruptcy, and 14,000 people lose their coverage entirely. The cost of inaction is simply too much for the people of this nation to bear.
So yes, fixing this crisis will not be easy. Our opponents will attack us every day for daring to try. It will require time, and hard work, and there will be days when we don’t know if we have anything more to give. But there comes a moment when we all have to choose between doing what’s easy, and doing what’s right.
This is one of those times. And moments like this are what this movement was built for. So, are you ready?
Please commit now to taking at least one action in your community this month to build support for health insurance reform:
http://my.barackobama.com/CommitAugust
Let’s seize this moment and win this historic victory for our economy, our health and our families.
Thank you,
President Barack Obama
......................................................
The astroturfer-in-chief has declared this “the moment” his astroturfing apparatus “was built for.” Let’s see if his manufactured outrage can actually stand up to - and defeat - the efforts of regular Americans who are sincerely concerned about the direction their country is headed.
Personally, my money’s on the American people rather than on the former community organizer and his band of goons.
